Advice for organizing and leading trail runs
Trail Leading
Examples of Waivers
Here are some samples of waivers from various clubs, events, and recovery groups that we readily found online. In addition to the ones listed below, a quick Google search will turn up many more.
Planning a Trail Run & Pre-Runs
Trails that you find online may be outdated and not reflect current conditions. Before you lead a group on a club run, the Trail Leader needs to pre-run the route.
Roles of Trail Leader, Tail, and Mid-Gunner
There are at least two, but usually three, people who serve as the staff on a trail run.
The Trail Leader is in the front, obviously, and navigating the route. Being in the lead, they don’t have good visibility of the caravan behind (other than the single jeep directly following them).

Drivers Brief
As a Trail Leader, it is important to hold a brief Drivers Meeting before heading out on the trail. This meeting serves as an opportunity to verify attendance, collect signed waivers, and to make introductions of your team.
Here is an example of the template that I use when I am leading a group.
Find a trail: Utah, Nevada
Our friends at Dixie 4Wheel Drive in St George UT have compiled several sets of trails & maps for some of the most popular events & offroading spots in Utah and Nevada. Included are: Sand Hollow/Sand Mtn UT (Winter 4x4 Jamboree), Logandale NV (Hump n Bump), Mesquite NV, Moab Utah, Kanab-North Rim NV.
Find a trail: Wild West Offroad Trails
Here is a link to a well orgranized site that is a great source of trails in the Nevada, Calif, and Arizona areas. Compiled and created by our colleague Max Davis, who was mover/shaker of the well known Wild West Jeep Club (later known as the Wild West Jeep Collective after the group split). Max is highly respected and well-known in the Jeep community, and is based out of Northern Nevada.
Numbering & arranging your vehicles
If you are leading a trail run with more than a handful of vehicles, it is a good practice to arrange them strategically and to assign “numbers” to each driver.
Organizing Multi-day Trips
One of our favorite Jeep club activities is to head out on a multi-day excursion to a distant national park or landmark, for sightseeing and some offroading.
The biggest difficulty in planning out these runs is that, due to the distances involved, the Trail Leaders cannot pre-run the routes & trails ahead of time.
The key to organizing successful multi-day club runs is RESEARCH and PLANNING.
